As their striking good looks would suggest, the Clump-o-Lumps also possess one-of-a-kind personalities. In our “Creature Feature” Q&As, we shine the spotlight on an individual member of the Clump-o-Lump family, revealing much more than meets the big shiny black eye! Get to know each and every creature, because the fun starts with one!
We didn’t know Bee-o was resting her eyes (and antennae) when we found her. Startled and confused, she immediately flew in the air and buzzed around. When she finally realized we just wanted to ask her a few questions, she relaxed her wings and started chatting away.
1. Name: Bee-o the Bee.
2. Favorite thing to do: After I’ve been flying around all day, I love to take a load off in a nice comfy bed and cuddle. Nap with me, please!
3. Catchphrase: “Free to bee you and me.”
4. Hobbies: In my free time, I practice ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. It’s completely soothing and helps me channel my artistic impulses. I tend to focus on the slanting of the stem, the curves of the petals, the . . . well, you get it.
5. Food I love: There’s a reason why humans describe something as tasting like nectar when it’s really delicious. When I visit a flower and drink its nectar, I recognize that I’m getting to consume what the gods drank.
6. Inter
esting factoid about you: My wings flap really fast—up to almost 17,000 beats per minute. That’s not the only way I make my buzzing sound, but it’s the one I hold most dear.
7. Favorite Bee-o power: I love the sound of my own buzzing, in part because it showcases my flying capabilities.
8. Other favorite power: I’m not going to lie, bees are pretty delicate creatures, and we fly away at the first sign of trouble, and when all else fails, we sting. (While my stinger makes me feel safe and secure, I don’t like to use it unless absolutely necessary!) So Tig-o’s courageous ability to prowl and roar is very appealing to me.
9. Best friend: I particularly admire Shark-o because, like bees, sharks are often misunderstood to be mean. And that’s totally a false impression. We’re all just animals trying to make our ways in the world.
10. Best Clump activity: Squid-o’s arms are so long and powerful compared to my six legs, so her torso allows me to practice my ikebana. The flowers are quite fragile, however, so I find I’m best able to climb around and perch on the vases and pots with Bird-o’s rump.
11. Idea for new Clump-o-Lump: Can I say something other than an animal? I mean, can I say a human? I revere the Queen of England. We bees were made to honor queens (ever heard the term “queen bee”?), and Queen Elizabeth is the biggest queen in the world. So I would make a Queen Elizabeth Clump-o-Lump. I also think I’d look great in a pastel suit.
12. Kids should know: I promise not to sting you. I know other bees may sting, but I love kids and would hate to hurt them.
13. Anything else? I’m a really hard worker. If you want something done, ask a bee. Also, since I’m a bee, I’m technically an insect. But whatever you do, please do not call me a bug. While all bugs are insects, not all insects are bugs, and I never want anybody to say that I bug them.
